Internal Medicine Residency Program
What is required for the application to Duke?
- ERAS application
- USMLE * step 1 score
- Medical school transcript
- Personal statement
- Dean's letter
- Three letters of recommendation
* If accepted to the program, you will need to successfully complete both parts of USMLE step 2 in order to start the program. Consequently, both parts of USMLE step 2 would need to be completed sufficiently in advance to permit reporting of scores prior to the start of orientation in late June. Reporting of USMLE scores can take up to approximately 8 weeks. Consult the USMLE policy for full details.
What are the minimum USMLE scores necessary for application?
We do not distribute information pertaining to actual score requirements for entry to the program or the algorithm by which we determine selection. We do not publish minimum scores for USMLE as we access the overall strength of the application as well as the competitiveness of the applicants to the program in the given year.
Is US clinical experience required?
Although US clinical experience is not a requirement and we do not establish a cutoff year limit after graduation, again we assess the overall strength of the application as well as the competitiveness of the applicants to the program in the given year; thus, US clinical experience would be strongly encouraged and application soon after graduation would also be encouraged.
Do you have preliminary intern positions?
How has Duke adjusted to the 24+6 rule?
The ward team takes call together and works overnight. On the post-call morning, the day float resident rounds with that post-call team. The day float resident also goes to attending rounds to get input on care from the attending. The day float resident helps the resident and intern in the morning. The resident and intern will depart prior to the 24+6 time point, and the day float resident will then complete all remaining work for the patients.
