Categorical Program
Internship
During this first year, interns receive exposure to a wide variety of inpatient and ambulatory experiences throughout general internal medicine and the subspecialties of internal medicine.
Rotations in this year are four weeks in duration. Interns also attend continuity clinic one half-day per week. The typical intern year of 12 rotations includes:
- General Medicine wards, four rotations
- Ambulatory medicine, two rotations
- Intensive Care Experience
- - Cardiac care unit
- - Medical intensive care unit
- Subspecialty inpatient wards, 3.5 rotations
- From Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Oncology, Pulmonary
Junior Assistant Residency
After receiving the foundation from internship, the junior assistant resident (JAR) year includes the opportunity to lead ward teams and to also gain greater experience in critical care and emergency medicine.
These rotations are four weeks in duration (except for the MICU, which is six weeks).
JARs also receive electives during this year. For those residents considering fellowship training, the first elective will be early in this year to help confirm their selection of a subspecialty and to begin the application process. Residents interested in clinical research may request the Clinical Research Training Course, which is a didactic course that includes training in statistics and clinical research methods. Residents design a research project during this rotation, and many of these projects have been conducted and presented at scientific meetings. This year's schedule includes:
- General medicine wards, two rotations
- Ambulatory medicine, three rotations
- Emergency medicine, one rotation
- Medical intensive care unit, 1.5 rotations
- Cardiac care unit, 1.5 rotations
- Electives, two rotations
- Night float, one rotation
Senior Assistant Residency
For our residents, the senior assistant residency (SAR) year is meant to provide greater experiences in general medicine and critical care, but this year also has significant elective time.
In this manner, SARs can have input into the design of this year and gain experience in areas of internal medicine that are more applicable to their future careers.
During this year, residents can request the international elective and train in such sites as Tanzania, China, Taiwan, Australia , Thailand , and England . In addition, residents can also request research electives during this year.
The typical SAR year of 12 rotations of four weeks duration each includes:
- General medicine wards, two rotations
- Ambulatory medicine, three rotations
- Intensive care unit, one rotation
- Night float and Day float, 0.5 rotation each
- Urgent care or emergency medicine, one rotation
- Electives, 3.5 rotations
