Throughout the year the Department of Medicine sponsors numerous social activities for the housestaff.
The Intern Picnic, complete with southern barbecue, kicks off the year. Then, on Thanksgiving Day, the Duke and VA housestaff square off in a co-ed flag football game. Following the game, a turkey dinner is enjoyed by the housestaff on-call in the Medical Residents' Library. The Department of Medicine's Holiday Party is a semi-formal occasion attended by housestaff, fellows and senior staff. A live band provides entertainment.
After the New Year, the activities continue. The chief residents transform a Friday a.m. Grand Rounds into the "Trivia Bowl," a mental match of trivia questions, pitting housestaff against attending staff.
The Housestaff picnic is the highlight of the spring season tradition, A country pig-pickin' barbecue is held in an idyllic country picnic setting. The house officers and their guests participate in the activities of the day, which includes a softball game (Interns vs. Residents). Another highlight of the spring season is a basketball game (Faculty vs. Residents) held at Cameron Stadium.
Pizza Rounds and Liver Rounds
Most important to the housestaff are the regularly occurring events that promote relaxation and camaraderie. Every Friday night at midnight, the on-call residents have "pizza rounds," a late night snack, in the hospital. Approximately once a month, housestaff attend "liver rounds" at a local pub to enjoy hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and music. Recreational sports are also popular among housestaff members. The housestaff often have their own city-league intramural teams in basketball, softball, and soccer.
North Carolina is a state of diverse regions, with the Atlantic Ocean as little as two hours to the east and the Appalachians four hours to the west.
There are ample opportunities for group and individual activities such as hiking, camping, white water rafting, and swimming.
These events all contribute to the excellent esprit de corps that the Duke housestaff shares both at work and at play.
